#startupmom: Christa Floresca

Tell us about your freshly launched startup, mama!

Bella Gravida is the first subscription rental service for stylish maternity wear. This is not a consignment service – this is designer garments from around the world for one flat monthly fee. We launched on September 17th  and had our first customers in under 60 minutes.

What inspires you and your work?

Frumpy inspires me. I work hard every day for pregnant and nursing women to feel beautiful. It is our ‘why.’ Every garment selected, every detail, every decision is made hoping to help our customers regain their style and self-confidence while pregnant. Phrases like “I hate the way I look” reminds me about how I felt while pregnant.

What does a typical day look like in your world?

There is no typical yet. I am doing every job right along with my team. Some mornings it is press interviews while helping to pack inventory for shipment. Others, I am helping with the editorial calendar and unpacking new inventory for cataloging. This IS a startup and I’m a CEO who rolls up her sleeves.

Who calls you "Mommy"?

I have a vivacious, fun, gorgeous 10 month old little girl, whose name is Hope Olivia.

What is the best advice you've received from another mom?

I have two answers: Hope has reflux, so to hear about gripe water and gas drops were small miracles. The other was to take a lot of pictures, but don’t experience her moments through a lens. It’s okay to miss taking a picture of her first steps so you’ll be in the moment with her when it happens.

What was a time you felt like you were doing this mom thing really well?

HA! When I hit that spot, I will let you know. Seriously, it’s getting easier and harder at the same time. Really well? My daughter hands things over to other people, we're teaching her to share. When she is holding a toy and I say, “Hope – for momma?” She hands it right over and then claps. Perfect.

What’s your mom style?

I love stylish mixed with comfort. And, I still wear a lot of edgy black with silver accessories.

What do you love most about being a #startupmom?

The freedom to work from home for now, and to do what I need to when I need to for my family. Although, my boss is a slavedriver! I LOVE that I work for myself. And for Hope.

When and where do you get most of your work done?

At my kitchen table mostly – although I’ve been told I have to move my computer into the office at some point. And, my best work happens after Hope goes down for the night.

Did you take time off or scale back when you had Hope?

Nope, I ramped it up. Bella Gravida was created while I was pregnant. I was working right up until the moment it was time to check in for induction. Truthfully, I didn’t work full time for about three weeks after my c-section, but things were already moving rapidly forward. We didn’t have time for me to be down – I had styles to order and investors to meet!

What’s hard about being a #startupmom?

Sleep deprivation is still a struggle. And, I want desperately to regain more of a work/life balance. But, it will happen. Just not right now.

What’s your most recent brag-able accomplishment?

We LAUNCHED! A handful of people and volunteers built this entire site and business from nothing. We set a goal to launch on September 15 and we launched on September 17. Not bad for moving from Virginia to Maryland the week before, with a 10 month old. I am SO proud of what has been created. The reaction from women I’ve never met is so enthusiastic!

Your favorite place in the world is..?

On any private beach in Grand Cayman – it’s my heaven and when I am at the most peace.

The three words that describe your family?

My Greatest Loves.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned as a new #startupmom?

It’s not for the faint-hearted but it can be done. I’m a first time mother and a first time business owner. I don’t know how to effectively manage it all yet – but I am trying, really hard, every day. I’ve learned to give myself a break. I’ve learned to ask for and accept help. I’ve learned that this is a team effort. I’ve learned that I have a voice, and a mission. I’ve learned that the best thing I can do for my daughter is to give her an example she can be proud of. I’ve also learned the value of naps.
