how to have a high fashion pregnancy

Nothing gives the true feeling of “a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear” like pregnancy does.

It may be tempting to default to the comfortable t-shirt and yoga pants, but it’s more fun to get creative with dressing your new curves and make the most out of this special moment in life.  Most commercial maternity wear is anything but high fashion, but it only takes just a bit of thinking outside-the-box to amp up an otherwise boring outfit while staying comfortable.

Here are my maternity wear must-haves and how I styled them to create a less commercial, more high-fashion look while pregnant:

A cardigan with maternity tank and leggings is my default ensemble for an easy, cool-weather outfit.  Here I choose an extra-long cardigan with sheer texture and leather leggings to add an edge.

What to wear while pregnant: long cardigan

At 11 weeks – Tom Ford glasses, Ports 1961 cardigan, Marc by Marc Jacobs leather leggings, Pedro Garcia booties.

Having a summer pregnancy, the maxi dress were my go-to piece for everyday wear.  Not having to deal with pants or a waist line, the maxi dress is to me by far the most comfortable pregnancy wear. Choose a flowey silhouette, or a form-fitting stretch material to show off your new curves.

What to wear while pregnant: the flowy maxi

At 18 weeks – French Connection dress.

What to wear while pregnant: slinky maxi dress

At 24 weeks – Riller & Fount maxi dress, ASOS hat, Tom Ford frames.

A simple, cotton spandex stretch skirt goes with almost every loose-fitting top that still fits the pregnant belly.  This is the most affordable (under $15!) yet essential piece of my maternity purchases.  Here I have styled it with a loose high-low top.

What to wear while pregnant: stretchy skirt

At 35 weeks – ASOS top, H&M skirt, Vince Camuto boots, Holst + Lee necklace, Tom Ford sunnies.

Can you tell “stretchy” is key in my maternity wear? This form-fitting silhouette is actually more slimming than a wide cut.

What to wear while pregnant: bodycon dress

At 32 weeks – Nasty Gal dress, ASOS hat, Kenneth Jay Lane collar, Barneys New York clutch, Prada sunnies and Christian Louboutin slingbacks.

At 33 weeks – Nom maternity dress, G-Star Raw jacket, Anchyi Wei Designs necklace, Christian Louboutin slingbacks, Dior bag.

Choose a flowey button-down in a couple sizes up to allow room for the growing belly.  The drapery on the front of this blouse allows me to wear it unbuttoned at the bottom with a maternity tank inside.

What to wear while pregnant: button down shirt

At 34 weeks – Alexander Wang blouse, H&M skirt, Tom Ford glasses, Vince Camuto boots.
